Counting growth rings on a European Black pine trunk with a binocular microscope

With its rapid growth and straight trunk, the European black pine quickly became the obvious reforestation choice. Introduced only recently in France, it is still unfamiliar in sylviculture. To help forest managers in their choice, Cemagref, the forestry development institute IDF and agricultural research school INRA joined forces to produce a model which would reproduce the influence of sylvicultural practice and soil fertility on black pine growth and timber quality. This is an important decision-making aid for a variety resistant to both strong winds and possible global warming.
