Freshwater macrophytes: biology, ecology and management

This special issue deals with a state of knowledge in France concerning biology and ecology of aquatic macrophytes (i.e. lichens, macro-algae, bryophytes, pteridophytes, phanerogams). It explains scientific advances on current taxonomic tools and methods for identification of phytocenoses and their ecophysiological specificities. Macrophytes are studied in relation with the environmental conditions in which they grow, and according to their roles in the physical habitat and their interactions with the entire aquatic fauna.

The issues of the scientific research on the macrophytes are threefold. First, it enlightens the local stakeholders on the indicators of watercourses state (e.g. trophy). Besides to study and to understand macrophytes bring some answers regarding the issue of the proliferating, indigenous or exotic species which they have a specific biology and ecology. Finally this research questions on the management and conservation methods of rare species.

Planet Earth at the Heart of Science

This book has been jointly produced by several French research organisations for the international Year of Planet Earth. Vivid, concise writing and more than 300 photographs taken by the researchers themselves offer magnificent-and disturbing-panorama of our planet at the beginning of the 21st century, in all the splendour, diversity and vulnerability of its landscapes and rock formations, its oceans, climate and natural phenomena, its plants and animal kingdoms and the activities of its human societies.

Fish of French Natural Lakes

After a succinct presentation of lake ecology, the ecological demands of some 27 species are set out, with their reproduction strategies, data on growth and population structure. This is followed by a description of how population composition evolves, depending on the degree of eutrophication of the environment. The various aspects of managing and conserving these populations, some of which are under threat, are also mentioned. This is a reference work for ichthyologists, biologists and ecologists, but will also be of interest to those involved in managing aquatic systems.

Landscape: from Knowledge to Action

This book is a collection of the contributions of researchers who have analysed examples of landscape actions, primarily in Europe, on the basis of actual experiences. It illustrates the diversity of situations and ideas found in Europe today and addresses the following issues: challenges facing landscape action, relationships between landscape and public space within the urban context, ideas underlying policy development and implementation and, finally, channels for public participation...

Geophysical and Geotechnical Methods for Diagnosing Flood Protection Dikes

Guide for Implementation and Interpretation
Cyrille Fauchard, Patrice Mériaux
This book presents a three-phase methodology for the efficient diagnosis of “dry dikes” (i.e. dykes built above normal water levels of the rivers that provide protection at time of flood). It is invaluable for anyone involved in dike safety; notably owners, managers, engineers and contractors, and provides all the information required for effective dike diagnosis and for initiating more extensive work or more detailed study.

Double success for the European sturgeon
At Saint-Seurin sur l’Isle in the Gironde department, Cemagref researchers have just succeeded in two artificial European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) reproduction operations. Some 100,000 larvae were born, nearly ten times more than in 2007.

Partnership-research programs in agricultural and environmental engineering
Cemagref came into existence in 1981 through the merger of a technical centre specialised in agricultural mechanisation and a technical-support centre within the Agriculture ministry. Twenty-five years later, Cemagref has become a research organisation targeting directly useable results and that is firmly established in the French and European scientific community. The examples presented in this book illustrate the interactive and iterative approach between research and society that characterises the partnership research carried out at Cemagref. More
