Since July 2002, only end waste has been allowed into landfills. Four-fifths of waste in France comes from agriculture, which uses 170,000 to 190,000 tonnes of plastic. The only lawful methods of disposing of it are incineration, recycling, and composting, but all are expensive and collection systems have not yet been clearly established. Another solution would be to use biodegradable plastics which can be composted or buried directly in the soil. One-third of agricultural plastics could be replaced by this type of biodegradable material.
